The time has come… your business is seeing success and rather than snag a ticket to the next burnout train, you’ve decided you’re going to outsource. First of all: I want to take a quick sec to celebrate you because, helllooo you’re at a place in your business where you can really start stepping into the CEO life — that’s amazing! BUT! I’ve seen way too many entrepreneurs get burned by hiring a virtual assistant or outsourcing before they were ready. Let’s avoid that, shall we?

Pain vs. Pleasure – which will win?

I get why our first thought when we’re experiencing growing pains is to hire tasks out. After all, it’s part of what makes us human.

As humans, we’ve done a pretty fine job of doing everything we can to avoid pain and embrace pleasure (yes… that kind of pleasure but there are other kinds like watching puppy videos). In business, that can look like so many different things.

Get ready because here come some examples:

  • Hopping onto Instagram for a Reels binge rather than deal with that client email just yet.
  • Working on a new offering that’s a half-baked idea but seems so much more exciting than the one that isn’t even finished.
  • And yes, outsourcing before you or your business is ready just to take something off your plate.

Any of these sound familiar? It’s okay! You get no judgment from me because I’ve been there — especially with that second bullet point. When it comes to ideas, I get squirrel brain. It’s just the truth.

All those examples have the same thing in common: avoiding the not-so-pretty side of business in order to chase after the new or the fun.

The problem is… it tends to backfire, doesn’t it?!

Sure, we might feel great in the moment, but that client email is still lingering, that unfinished project is probably going to get your mind on a hamster wheel of “Do I actually finish… ANYTHING?!”, and that virtual assistant you thought would save so much time is actually costing you even more in re-doing their work.

It’s bad, babe.

before considering outsourcing, You have to get ultra-clear on what your business needs right now.

I see way too many posts within Facebook groups and even jobs posts that are so incredibly vague that, from an outside perspective, it’s obvious that the poster doesn’t really know what they need.

Like, “I need help with my social media” — excuse me, but WTF DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!

There are so many different platforms, new ones are coming out every day. And even within those platforms, there are multiple platforms. Yup, looking at you Instagram with your Reels, Stories, IGTV, and inevitable voice chat.

So, you need to get specific. Really specific.

Listen, I’m a specificity girl. I preach it in my voice work, branding work, and business.

Why? Because it matters!

In the case of outsourcing or being on the hunt for a virtual assistant, you don’t waste time sifting through a ton of candidates who are all, “I know social media!” and when you do bring on someone, you know exactly what to task them with.

In my course, Leading with Ease, we actually spend a few lessons on really breaking down where your business is at right now, where you want to be, and with a fun little spreadsheet combining it all… students figure out fairly quickly what will give them the most bang for their buck.

In other words…

What group of tasks they can outsource to give them back the most time so that they can focus on scaling and hitting their 6-figure income goals. Or so that they just have that time back to spend with their family or on passion projects. It’s up to them.

That’s what time-freedom gives you: the freedom to decide whatever you want to do with your time.

And you know what else is a benefit of really taking the time in getting clear on how you run your business when considering what to outsource?

You will save so much more time by writing a job description that will attract the most qualified candidates and repel the ones who aren’t a great fit.

Now, this also leads me to an important point:

Do not expect to hire a team member who can do everything.

I’m talking wanting a VA who knows WordPress, can write your email newsletters for the highest conversions, edit your podcast episodes, is a whiz at Photoshop, and can code an app.

It just ain’t going to happen. Or, at least, it ain’t going to happen well.

Yes, as a solopreneur, you are used to wearing all the hats but can you admit to doing all those things as well as you would have liked?

Probably not.

So don’t expect that of someone you are outsourcing to either.

All in all… if you’ve been considering outsourcing tasks or hiring a VA, stop and ask yourself:

Do I know exactly what would benefit myself and my business the most? Is there a pattern in the sort of tasks that are the biggest time or energy suckers? And if I had to bring someone into my business today, would I know what to task them with?

If you’re unsure about any of these, I want you to slam the brakes.

Put that car in park, girl.

Take a few hours or an afternoon to really figure it out. It’ll save you time and a migraine.
