How to get the most out of Virgo SZN
Ah, Virgo season… the season that kicks off all that pumpkin spice and when we crave to go apple picking.
Virgo rules the 6th house of health, wellness, and our daily habits and routines. And because she rules the 6th house, I wanted to share six different ways you can honor the Maiden.
Ready? Here we go…
1. Audit your systems: What areas of your life are feeling disorganized? What do you need to do to get things in order?
As counterintuitive as it may sound, having systems in place in your life actually provides more freedom<. How? Because the fewer decisions you have to make, the more time and energy you’ll have for the important things in your life.
If you feel like you don’t have time for everything you want to tackle, look at your systems. They might not be able to support you. Or you’ve got a process leak somewhere.
Here are a few ideas that could help get you started on the road to better systems:
- With work, are there templates you can make to tackle the most common emails you receive?
- At home, have you tried meal planning? Your meal planning doesn’t have to be too specific. It can be as simple as Meatless Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday Leftovers, etc.
- Do you spend a lot of time looking for your keys or your favorite pen? Create a space where these things live so you never have to play an un-fun version of hide and seek with your things.
- Delegate household chores or sign up for a grocery delivery service.
Another way of thinking about this is by giving yourself permission to be lazy. Laziness can lead to efficient ways of completing certain tasks. Don’t believe me? That’s cool. But you might want to take Bill Gates’ word for it: “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”
2. Take note of when perfectionism rears its ugly head
Things are better completed well than never finished at all because you’re waiting for it to be perfect. Howevertantalizing perfectionism can be to us, it is a lie. A mirage. Because nothing in this world – hell, this universe – is perfect. Yet, there is still so much beauty isn’t there?
Are there areas in your life where perfectionism is holding you back? Can you pinpoint where this might stem from?
For many, it tends to stem from something that happened to us when we were kids. A parent who made you feel like their love was conditioned upon your grades. A teacher who joked about the work you turned in front of your class. When we, as kids, are made to feel like we’re not good enough, we tend to search perfection.
As a recovering perfectionist, I can confidently say that it ain’t nothin’ but a time suck. Perfectionism, that is.
Make perfectionism unattractive and you will find yourself accomplishing so much more.
Both Disney+ and HBOMax released their apps despite being buggy af. And they’ve got millions on the line! But they knew it’s better for something to be done than perfect. You could always make tweaks later.
3. How can you be more intentional with your habits and routines?
OK, well… if you’re really wanting to be more intentional with your habits you have got to read Atomic Habits. In it, one of the tricks James Clear shares about sticking to good habits is by visually measuring them.
There are a few different ways you can do that. You can create a habit tracker in Notion with checkboxes. Or, if you prefer a more tangible method, you can have a desktop calendar and mark the days you completed a habit. Another method is to move small items from one jar to another every time you complete one of your habits.
Let’s say you are a brand photographer looking to connect with small brands or influencers in your area. Rather than mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, you decide to be more intentional with your time. So, you come up with a plan: connect with 5 brands in your area each day via Instagram.
Got it? Great! Here’s what measuring that habit might look like:
You have a dish on the left side your desk with 5 sodalite stones. Sodalite is a crystal whose properties help you to communicate clearly. Also, it helps to build harmonious relationships. Umm… pretty perfect for making Instagram connections, am I right?
You also have a small dish on the right side of your desk. This one though, sits empty.
As you connect with a brand in your area by commenting or DM’ing, you move a stone to the empty dish. You do this 5 times and once you’ve accomplished that, you close out the app.
4. Where are you being too hard on yourself? Why?
The mom who beats herself up for not having enough time for her kids or her husband or herself. The young woman who hates looking at photos of herself because she feels she isn’t photogenic. The guy who isn’t seeing results he had hoped for when he started working out. The person with ADHD who forgot to turn their paper in on time.
Can you imagine the self-talk that might be going on in these folks’ heads? I’m sure you can.
Rarely is any person immune to negative self-talk. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if a majority of people said they’re their own worst critic. And I don’t know about that critic inside your head but mine is a downright asshole. Often times the things I have thought of myself were either 1) total BS and/or 2) not at all fair.
It’s normal to want to be our very best in anything we undertake. And while we can damn near be rockstars in some areas of our life, we can’t be in every area.
Give yourself grace. You might be running up a hill that’s filled with obstacles of things that are no fault of your own.
5. Go on a hike or meditate in nature
Virgo is ruled by the Earth so this season, be mindful of the rituals you do that help ground you. Meditation is fantastic for this. Head to a park with the aim to be present within your surroundings. Sit on a patch of land that calls to you.
Take a few deep breaths and imagine the earth reaching up to cradle you with vines in a loving, safe way. Then, listen. Observe. How many different bird calls can you hear? Notice the bees hard at work pollinating. How many different shades of green do you see? How are others around you enjoying the park? Feel free to place your hands on the earth by you and feel the energy.
Then repeat in your thoughts or under your breath at least 6 times: I am of this earth and she is of me. With her help, I attract abundance naturally.
6. Clean out your closet, your desk, and even your computer’s folders
Clutter is the nemesis of creativity. When you are overly visually stimulated it is so much easier to get overwhelmed. What feels better to you? A desk covered in paper and post its and days-old wrappers from a snack. Or, a clean one?
The clean one right? There’s no fuss. Your laptop doesn’t have to fight for space… ahh… it’s relaxing just thinking about it.
Let go of the things in your life that are no longer serving you or no longer spark joy. This can be tough and if you’re not sure how to do that, I wrote a blog post: How to let go of what no longer serves you.
And, please, for the love of all that’s holy, clean out your Downloads folder. Stop forcing yourself to rummage through what’s your computer’s junk drawer. Aiming to do this once a week or even once a month will save you so much time in the long run.
There you have it! Six ways you can get the most out of Virgo season. Now, go off and choose to implement at least one.
And a big happy, happy birthday to all the Virgos in this house. Celebrate your gorgeous selves.
